Become Debt Free

Debt free living seems like a great idea in the beginning. We hate debt, everyone hates debt, and we all dream about the day when we can finally become debt free, say good bye to revolving credit and incessant late fees, and start living our lives in Fat City. But there is more to debt freedom that meets the eye, or the wallet for that matter. Not everyone should be debt free.

What happens when you become debt free?
By definition, debt freedom is the absence of debt in any form. This isn't debt relief that takes care of some of the more problematic debts, and it isn't debt management that teaches you how to cope and thrive with debts of all kinds. Debt free programs are designed to eliminate each and every aspect for debt - even the debts we might want to keep for ourselves:

If you really want to become debt free you will have to get rid of the major, long term expenses, or consolidate them to pay them off sooner than their existing repayment date. 20 years left on your mortgages? Too bad - either sell, consolidate, or get out of the way.
And you can't take on any more debts in the future, not if you are planning on keeping that debt freedom absolutely spotless. No cars, no credit cards, no spur of the moment vacations on credit - just a mundane life in your affordable apartment, living cautiously, well within your financial means.

If you are looking to become debt free, just be ready to put away your dancing shoes. Debt freedom is good, but it comes at a cost - no risks, no adventures, the death of the American spirit.
